Good cholesterol. Bad cholesterol: Myth

Cholesterol in our body exists only in one form. Cholesterol is an important type of fat which is required to make many hormones & is needed for nerve health too.


Do you know that cholesterol is made inside our body too. So even if you avoid eating it through diet, your body will still make it.

Cholesterol through food is present only in animal foods and not in plant food.

So guys, our vegetable oils do not have cholesterol.


But have you noticed that people who are vegetarian also have high cholesterol in their blood? From where is this cholesterol made in our body?

Heard of saturated fat?. This fat is present widely in animal food. Amongst the plant food, it is present in ghee, coconut oil & margarine.

This saturated fat gets converted to cholesterol in our body. This cholesterol is carried by a transport mechanism called as LDL. So more the cholesterol moe will be the LDL. This LDL is called as bad cholesterol. This LDL truck, is like garbage truck, it drops the cholesterol in the arteries while travelling. This cholesterol starts depositing in the arteries causing blockages.


Good cholesterol, is not a different cholesterol, it is actually a type of transporter called as HDL, whose duty is to carry the cholesterol that LDL has deposited in the arteries. We need to have high levels of HDL to have negative effects of LDL.

Hence having food or fat that increases HDL, is important and reducing the intake of foods that increase LDL should be restricted.
